Ruth Gipps

(1921-1999)

You can listen to the American premiere of Ruth Gipps’ Oboe Concerto in d minor, Op. 20 in the glory of its full orchestration with Katherine and the Richmond Symphony here. This performance from November, 2021, will not be accessible after June 30, 2022.

Oboe Concerto in d minor, Op. 20

Though this recording was made in my living room and delivered with piano reduction, I believe this is the first recording of this work. Like all of the rest of Ms. Gipps’ pieces I have learned, I learned from her handwritten parts. Thankfully, with the scheduled American premiere of this work, it is now digitized and easily read.

Sea-Shore Suite, Op. 3b

I’ve been playing this piece for several years and again, while it is all done in my living room, is sadly the only recording of the work. I was thrilled to see it recently programmed on the Proms in August 2021, first by François Leleux who cancelled, and then performed by Olivier Stankiewicz. The work has been available in digital format for many months now.

Piper of Dreams for Oboe Solo., Op. 12b

This piece became rather wildly popular after it was named required repertoire for an online oboe competition. When I learned and performed the work here, it had not yet been digitized, an unfortunate characteristic of much of Ms. Gipps’ music.
